The Dynamic Mic – Versatile Beast

The dynamic mic is quite possibility the most important tool you’ll ever have in your audio recording setup or home studio.

The dynamic mic offers an amazing amount of versatility when it comes time to capture instruments with your recording program. And while a large diaphragm condenser mic is generally preferred when it comes to recording a vocal track, a dynamic mic is quite capable of suitably completing the task as well. In the audio recording world, it’s common knowledge that the Shure SM57 is the all-around workhorse. Almost every home studio and professional studio is equipped with at least one. However, there is a long list of other companies that manufacturer models of dynamic mics that can perform equally as well. So do not go out and purchase a handful of Shure SM57’s for your audio recording studio just because you feel you are supposed to. I have an SM57, and I love it. But I have a slew of other microphones that operate near or at the same quality level. Check out this article about some of the best budget microphones I’ve encountered.

The best thing you can do is experiment, which is one of the great things about recording audio. Get on and check out some dynamic mic shootouts. Educate yourself. Get as much information as you can about dynamic mics. Learn about the technical aspects of the functionality and what each specification means. Then you can make an educated guess about which microphone you would like to go with it. And do not forget user reviews. These have helped me out tremendously. But even with all this information, you will still not know 100% if the microphone you get is going to be the right mic for the job. Every home studio is different. Every piece of music equipment is different. Every engineer is different. What works for one person may not work for you. So choose one and try it out. And be sure not to consider it useless if at first it does not perform up to task. There is nearly an endless amount of scenarios that can occur in the home audio recording studio. This new dynamic mic, although not ideal for one situation, may still be able to find a place to excel. Check out some of the best budget microphones below.
